Kharkiv academic theatre of Opera and Ballet is one of the oldest musical theatres. Its history started in 1780. 1891 the theater moved into the building of former Commercial club. Since 1991 it has been functioning in a new building. The theatre repertoire includes over 60 operas and ballets. „Taras Bulba” and “Natalka the Poltavite” by Mykola Lysenko are regarded as the pearls of Ukrainian opera. The repertoire performs all the three ballets and four operas by Petro Chaykovsky, and six operas by Verdi. The giant building of Kharkiv Opera and Ballet theatre has a nick name “The artists’ city”. More than 800 highly qualified artists and technical employees work here at present. The big theatre lounge can place an audience of 1500 people. The theater large hall can be a ground for an exhibition or any relevant art project. Kharkiv academic theatre of Opera and Ballet is worth of visiting and brings joy to the audience through its art.
