Large Jerboa Taxidermy Specimen (Allactaga major)

The taxidermy specimen represents a small steppe rodent inhabiting dry meadow-steppe and virgin steppe landscapes of Ukraine. The animal is depicted in a characteristic alert posture on its hind legs, emphasising its ability to move rapidly by jumping and to constantly monitor its surroundings. Its appearance is characterised by long hind legs, short forelimbs, large ears, and light sandy-coloured fur that provides natural camouflage among steppe vegetation.

The specimen demonstrates the characteristic morphological features of jerboas — a group of rodents adapted to life in open, arid environments. Their powerful hind legs enable them to make long leaps and escape predators rapidly. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, green plant parts, and insects.

Provenance: Made for the museum in 1958.
