Decorative Plate

Indo-Persia.

The plate is circular in shape with a broad decorated rim and was made using artistic metalworking techniques. The centre of the plate features a composition of two human figures, a man and a woman, depicted in traditional Eastern dress amid lush vegetal decoration. The figures are surrounded by stylised flowers, leaves, and scrolls, creating a harmonious ornamental background. The central field is separated from the rim by a raised decorative band executed using the technique of chasing.

The rim is decorated with a continuous vegetal ornament characteristic of the artistic traditions of the Middle East, Iran, and neighbouring regions. The combination of a figural scene with rich ornamental decoration is a characteristic feature of Eastern decorative arts of the 18th–19th centuries, in which ornament and figural imagery formed an integrated artistic composition.
