Painting. Portrait of Vasyl Dokuchaiev.

By V. I. Pobokov.

The portrait depicts the prominent natural scientist Vasyl Vasylovych Dokuchaiev, founder of scientific soil science. The scholar is shown seated in an armchair in a calm and composed pose. The artist focuses on the sitter’s face, high forehead, concentrated gaze, and thick grey beard, which give the image an impression of wisdom, inner strength, and scholarly authority. The dark, restrained suit emphasises the formal character of the portrait and the sitter’s status as a member of the intellectual elite of his time.

The work is executed in a realistic manner, with careful attention to the details of the sitter’s appearance and clothing. The neutral greenish-blue background does not distract from the figure but instead enhances the psychological expressiveness of the portrait. Soft lighting and a restrained colour palette create an atmosphere of concentration and respect for the scholar’s personality.

Provenance: The painting was donated to the museum by the artist in 2026.
