Painting. Huts.

The landscape composition by the renowned Ukrainian artist Vasyl Hryhorovych Krychevsky depicts a rural scene in the early evening. In the centre foreground is a group of traditional Ukrainian huts with sloping thatched roofs in dark brown and grey tones. The walls of the huts are rendered in warm, light ochre and beige shades, with yellowish highlights from the sunlight near the horizon. In the background, a village and a body of water extend horizontally across the central part of the landscape. Particular attention is given to the atmospheric effects of sunset, when the sky is filled with delicate pink, lilac, and golden hues.

The work is executed in a free, expressive painterly manner, using rich colour relationships and a pronounced brushstroke texture. The artist not only records a specific landscape motif but also conveys an emotional impression of the Ukrainian countryside, emphasising its harmonious relationship with the surrounding natural environment. The simplified forms of the buildings and the soft contours of the landscape create an atmosphere of tranquillity and lyrical contemplation.

Provenance: The painting was donated to the museum by Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich in 1993.
