Guttus

Ancient Greece, Olbia. Classical Antiquity.

The vessel has a rounded body, a short, wide neck with a slightly pronounced rim, a massive loop handle attached to the shoulder and upper part of the body, and a short spout with a small opening. It stands on a low ring-shaped foot, providing stability. The upper part of the guttus is covered with a reddish-brown slip, while the lower part is terracotta-coloured.

The surface shows minor traces of use and irregularities characteristic of traditional hand production.

The smooth contours of the body and the absence of ornamental decoration indicate the utilitarian function of the vessel.

The vessel is made of well-levigated clay and was fired in an oxidizing atmosphere.

Provenance: The object comes from the collection of the renowned patron, military diplomat, artillery colonel, and native of Poltava Pavlo Bobrovskyi (1860–1945).
